How
do I make my own art?
10 WAYS YOU
CAN MAKE YOUR OWN "ART"
This blog has helped me discover my
home decorating philosophy. Who would have thought? ?
These aren't very original but they
work well for me.
My two main design beliefs so far are:
A. Keep it simple.
B. Personalize it.
I shared how to simplify holiday decor earlier this
week. I'm going to talk about ways to personalize your wall
art.
This is something I have already
mentioned, but I don't like store-bought wall art.
While I may find the odd unique photo
at a flea marketplace, I tend not to make my own for that
specific space.
I love the fact it is my, and that you can't find that decor in another
person's house.
These concepts are worth a quick
review. Some of these ideas I have already shown you, and others are
self-explanatory.
These 'art' projects
are simple, easy to duplicate.
1. Painting it yourself is the
most risky option. I am afraid to pick up a brush. I'm not an
artist. It isn't as difficult as you think. Keep the image
simple like stripes. It is very fool-proof. This painting was made for our
foyer. I used craft and wall paints in the colors of the rooms that were
connected to it. Tape was helpful in keeping the lines straight.
2. Frame fabric. This is an easy
way to fill large spaces. Ikea frames are large and come with built-in
mats. You could also frame wrapping paper and wall paper. You could
make a beautiful and graphic statement with them.
3. You can frame pretty greeting
cards. When I visit a gift shop I look for beautiful cards such as these
botanicals.
Or these fruit prints (that were once
hung where my current diy Chalkboard is):
4. You can find printable images
online. Print your inspiration image. It is possible to frame it.
5. You can frame unique and
personal items. With a little glue, you can frame almost
anything. Use seashells and golf balls as well as brooches.
6. You can decorate your space by
hanging plates up on the wall. You could also make the plates. Hanging them
with picture hanging strips makes it easy
to remove and replace.
7. Print yours. Print a
favorite image. You can also create an image on your computer (such
as subway artwork). It can be printed
and enlarged at a photoshop. It can be framed.
8. Hang odd items on a
wall. My mom has a collection of shaving mirrors and combs. These
were hung in her powder room. One would be cute. She has an art
installation when she is in a group.
9. You can change the
color. You can paint it! The wood plaques were dark brown. I
wanted something lighter and white for our bedroom so I just bought some white
trim paint.
Our den's round mirror was once made of a very cheap fake burled wood. It
was round and chunky, so I bought it cheaply at Marshalls. All it required
was a coat black paint.
10. Do not let the above ideas
discourage you. You don't need to buy your entire art collection from a
big-box store. You can find unique prints anywhere you look.
You can find treasures at local galleries, gift shops and flea markets. It
doesn't take a lot to find treasures. Many small coffee shops and
restaurants offer local artist work for sale. Perhaps you know someone who
is a talented artist? There are even sites online where you can find
reasonably priced art
