What is keyword research?
Keyword research
involves the analysis of search terms people type into search engines in order
to find relevant data. This is often done for SEO (search engine optimization)
or general marketing purposes. Keyword research can
reveal the most popular queries, rank difficulty, and other information.
Why is keyword research so important?
Keyword research
can provide valuable insights into what your target audience is searching for
on Google. These search terms will help you to inform your content strategy
and larger marketing strategy.
When conducting
online research, people use keywords to find answers. You will get more traffic if your content is able to reach
our audience through searches. You should
therefore target those searches.
Additionally,
the Inbound
Methodology doesn't
allow us to create content that tells people what we want them to say. Instead,
we should create content that people want to learn about. Our audience is coming to you.
All of this starts
with keyword research.

you to address the most common questions in your audience.

the same as exact-match algorithms.
Keywords
vs. Topics
We hear more about
how SEO has developed in
the past 10 years and how important keywords have become to our ability rank
for the search terms people use every day.
While this may be
true to a certain extent, it is not the best approach for SEO professionals. It's not the keyword's intent, but whether or not a piece is
able to solve that intent. (We'll discuss intent in just a moment).
However, keyword
research does not have to be outdated. Let me
explain:
Keyword research
can tell you which topics are most popular among your audience. Topics is the operative word here. By researching keywords with
high searches per month you can identify topics and organize your content
accordingly. These topics can then be used
to determine which keywords you want to target.
Keyword Research: The Elements
When conducting
keyword research, there are three key elements you should pay attention to.
1. Relevance
Google ranks
content based on relevance. This is where search
intent comes into play. If your content
meets searchers' requirements, it will rank only for that keyword. Your content must also be the most relevant to the query. Google will not rank your content higher than any other
content on the internet if it is less valuable.
2. Authority
Google will give
more weight to authoritative sources. This means that you
need to do everything you can to make your site an authoritative source. You
should also promote the content to gain social signals and backlinks. If your keyword SERPs contain heavy sources that you cannot
compete with (like Forbes and The Mayo Clinic), then you will not be considered
an authority in this space. Your chances of ranking are lower unless you create
exceptional content.
3. Volume
Although you may
rank on the first page of search results for a keyword, it won't bring in any
traffic to your website if it is not searched for. It's almost like opening a shop in a dead town.
Volume can be
measured using MSV (monthly searches volume), which is the total number of
keywords searched each month by all audiences.
How to Find Keywords for Your SEO Strategy
To help you
identify the keywords you should target, I will outline a keyword research
process. This will help you to create and implement a strong keyword
strategy that allows you to be found for search terms that you care about.
Step
1: Based on your knowledge about your business, make a list of relevant and
important topics.
This process
begins by thinking about the topics that you want to rank in terms of general
buckets. You will come up with 5-10 topic categories that you feel
are most important for your business. Later, you'll use these topic buckets to
help you come up with specific keywords.
These are the most
popular topics to blog about if you're a regular blogger. These topics might be the ones that are most popular in
sales conversations. Think about
your buyer personas. What topics would you want your business to be found for? You might have general topics like:
