The federal government decided to amend the Dowry and Bridal Gifts Prohibition Act 1976 to protect the bride and the growing trend of dowry in the society. Under the Dowry and Bridal Gifts (Prohibition) Amendment Bill 2020, the Ministry of Religious Affairs has recommended a ban on dowry demand and display by the groom.


It has been further stated that the value of dowry and gifts given to the bride under the bill will not exceed 4 tons of gold, for this purpose the session of the Act will be amended. The wedding expenses will not be more than the price of 4 towels of gold. These expenses will include wedding function expenses and will not include dowry and bridal gift expenses.


The session will be modified for this purpose. Session 6A will be included in the Act, according to which the details and price of the items to be given in dowry and gifts by the parents of the bride and groom at the time of marriage will be entered in the column of marriage certificate. The Ministry of Religious Affairs, in consultation with the provinces, has sent a summary of the report. 1976 needs to be amended.


Gifts worth more than 1,000 will be banned from wedding guests. The session of the Act will be amended for this purpose. Session 52) will be included in the Act according to which in case of divorce the bride will be paid dowry items and gifts or the equivalent amount. Section 91 of the Act will be amended to increase the sentence from one month to one year.


Prepared by the Ministry of Religious Affairs and the Sisters' Gifts (Prohibition) Amendment Bill 2020 will be implemented initially to the extent of Islamabad. To make the bill applicable for the future, it is recommended to convert the amount mentioned in the Act into gold. Dowry solicitation and display of dowry by the groom will be banned for which sub-session 3 will be included in the session of the Act. Violation of the terms of this Act shall be punishable under section 9.
